Different French exams you can take

Table of contents

Bonjour à toutes et à tous ! Today, I would like us to take a closer look into the different French exams that you can take. DELF, DALF, TCF… Let’s try to understand everything in today’s article.

Different French exams you can take – Écouter

1. DELF

(Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française)

LevelA1.1 – B2

Certifications adapted to your level.

What for: To apply for residency in France (A2 for a 10 year residency permit) or a French speaking country, to enroll in a French university (at least B2), or to apply for French citizenship (at least B1).

In the DELF series, you have:

DELF Tous publics – For adults (18 and above), who would like to validate their learning of the French language in an official and permanent way. The DELF Tous Publics is composed of 4 levels: A1, A2, B1 and B2.

DELF Pro – More centered on the professional French and work environment.

DILF (Diplôme d’Initiation à la Langue Française) – For A1.1 learners in French. This is for those who just begun learning French, this is the first step before the DELF A1. This is only offered in France.

DELF Prim’ and DELF Junior et Scolaire – For children(Prim’) and teenagers (Junior et Scolaire).

The validity of the DELF (and DALF) series of exams is permanent. This means that the certification doesn’t expire. They are also delivered by le Ministère Français de l’Éducation Nationale (the French Ministry of Education).

A preparation is also necessary in order to take the DELF (and DALF) exams. Since the exams are very comprehensive, it’s good to know what to expect for each level.

2. DALF

(Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française)
 Level C1 – C2

The C1 and C2 levels are the highest. Regarding French exams you can take to certify your level, DALF C1 and C2 are the pinnacle of French language diplomas. Obtaining a DALF is a guarantee of a very high level of mastery of the French language.

If you would like to enroll in a French university and already have a DALF certification, you don’t need to pass any other DELF test.

3. TCF

(Test de Connaissance du Français)
Level: A1 – C2

What for: Regarding French exams you can take to evaluate or estimate one’s level in French, you can take a look at the TCF. It can be used to apply for residency in France (A2 for a 10 year residency permit) or a French speaking country, to enroll in a French university (at least B2), or to apply for French citizenship (at least B1).

TCF is also required for Canada and Québec immigration.

TCF ANF: for Access to French Nationality, in order to obtain French citizenship.
TCF CRF: for the French Resident Card.
TCF TP: for Tout Public, test for teenagers and adults certifying their level of French.
TCF DAP: for Demande d’Admission préalable, necessary for foreign students entering a bachelor’s degree or certain schools.
TCF Q: for Quebec, in order to be able to expatriate to Quebec.

Unlike the DELF and DALF series, the TCF doesn’t really require a big preparation, unless you choose to. This is a test that will attest your current level in French. This also means that you can have different levels for different skills (Listening comprehension, writing, reading, speaking).
Also, the validity of the TCF expires after 2 years.

4. TEF

(Test d’Évaluation du Français)
Level: A1 – C2

What forThe TEF is one of the French exams you can take to certify your level of French. It is also recognized as part of the process for :

Joining a school or university
Obtaining French or Swiss nationality with the TEF Naturalisation
Obtaining a resident card in France with the TEF Carte de Résident
Immigrate to Canada and obtain Canadian citizenship with the TEF Canada
Immigrate to Quebec with the TEF Quebec (TEFAQ)

The TEF is also valid for a period of 2 years. The TEF and the TCF are very similar, but are delivered by different public institutions.

5. DFP

(Diplôme de Français Professionnel)
Level: A1 – C1

What for: Since I have been working on this DFP with some of my students, I wanted to include it in the list. You can take the DFP to have a diploma and certify your level in professional French.

This diploma can be recognized worldwide. You have different categories of DFP, according to your work environment:

AFFAIRES (Business)

RELATIONS INTERNATIONALES (International Relations)

TOURISME-HÔTELLERIE-RESTAURATION (Tourism – Hotel Industry – Catering)

SANTÉ (Health)

The exam will depend on your level and the industry, of course, but will focus on more practical skills. Since this is, like the DELF and DALF, a diploma, it will require some preparation beforehand.

However, the validity is also permanent, unlike the TEF and TCF.

That was it for today, as I simply wanted to give you some quick info on the different exams you can take, at least the official ones that are recognized in France and French speaking countries.
