Bonjour à toutes et à tous ! Today, we are going to learn the most common French phrases to say in a restaurant. You probably already know that French cuisine (la cuisine française) is famous for being absolutely delicious. French cuisine is part of French culture. If you are planning to visit France, make sure not to miss out on French food. But before you do that, it’s always useful to learn the common phrases in French when you’re in  a restaurant. Without making you wait any longer, here we go : the most common French phrases to say in a restaurant.

Greetings

Bonjour madame! – Hello ma’am!

Bonjour monsieur! – Hello sir!

Bonsoir! – Good evening!

Excusez-moi, monsieur! – Excuse me, sir!

Excusez-moi, madame! – Excuse me, ma’am!

Le serveur – The waiter

La serveuse – The waitress

Est-ce que vous avez une table disponible pour nous? – Do you have a table available for us?

(WaiterQu’est-ce que je vous sers? / Je vous sers quoi? – What can I get you?

(WaiterVous avez choisi? / Est-ce que vous avez choisi? – Have you made your choice? 

Order drinks

In a restaurant, we often start with ordering drinks first. Here are the common French phrases to say in a restaurant (or a café) for ordering drinks:
 

(Les boissons)

Je voudrais un café, s’il vous plaît. – I would like a coffee, please.
Je vais prendre un jus d’orange, s’il vous plaît. – I am going to have some orange juice, please. 
Je voudrais un coca, s’il vous plaît. – I would like a coke, please. 
Je vais prendre un coca light, s’il vous plaît. – I am going to have a diet coke, please.
Je voudrais une bière, s’il vous plaît. – I would like a beer, please.
Je vais prendre une pression, s’il vous plaît. – I am going to have a draft beer, please.
S’il vous plaît – Please (formal)
Merci – Thank you
Je vous remercie. – I thank you.
Non merci – No thank you.

(WaiterEst-ce que vous voulez des boissons? – Would you like some drinks? 

(WaiterEst-ce que vous prendrez des boissons? Are you going to have some drinks?

Qu’est-ce que vous avez comme boissons? – What drinks do you have?

Qu’est-ce que vous avez comme boissons froides? – What cold drinks do you have?

Qu’est-ce que vous avez comme boissons chaudes? – What hot drinks do you have?

Qu’est-ce que vous avez comme vin? – What wine do you have?

 

Order food

L’entrée. – The appetizer

Le plat principal / Le plat. – The main dish

Le dessert. – The dessert

Je suis végétarien. – I am a vegetarian (man).

Je suis végétarienne. – I am a vegetarian (woman).

Je ne mange pas de viande. – I don’t eat meat.

Je ne mange pas de poisson. – I don’t eat fish.

Je suis allergique aux noix. – I am allergic to nuts.

Je voudrais + le/la/l’/les (or un/une/des) + plat – I would like + article + dish name

Je vais prendre + le/la/l’/les + plat – I am going to have + article + dish name.

Je vais prendre le poulet au curry, s’il vous plaît. – I’m going to have the chicken curry, please.

Je voudrais une tarte aux pommes, s’il vous plaît. – I would like an apple pie, please.

Je voudrais une glace à la fraise, s’il vous plaît. – I would like a strawberry ice cream, please. 

 

(Waiter) Est-ce que je peux prendre votre commande? – Can I take your order? 

Qu’est-ce que vous avez comme plats végétariens? – What vegetarian dishes do you have? 

(Waiter) Est-ce que vous voulez une entrée? – Would you like an appetizer?

(Waiter) Et comme plat? – And as the main dish? 

(Waiter) Est-ce que vous prendrez du vin? – Are you going to have wine?

(Waiter) Est-ce que vous voulez un dessert? – Would you like a dessert? 

(Waiter) Est-ce que vous prendrez un dessert? – Are you going to have a dessert?

Saying goodbye (and paying!) is part of the game as well! Here are some French phrases to say in a restaurant if you want to pay the bill and before leaving. 

Excusez-moi, est-ce que je pourrais avoir l’addition, s’il vous plaît? – Excuse me, may I have the bill, please?

(Waiter) Vous paierez comment? – How will you pay?

Je vais payer par carte. – I’m going to pay with a credit card.

Je vais payer en liquide / en espèces. – I’m going to pay with cash.

Je peux payer par carte? – Can I pay with a credit card?  

 

 

Vous prenez la carte? – Do you take credit cards?

Vous prenez les chèques? – Do you take checks?

 

 

Other

(Waiter) Est-ce que tout se passe bien? – Is everything going well?

Oui, tout se passe bien, merci. – Yes, everything is going well, thank you.

Est-ce que je pourrais avoir du sel, s’il vous plaît? – May I have some salt, please?

 

C’est très bon! – The food is very good!

C’est délicieux! – It’s delicious! 

Merci beaucoup. – Thank you very much.

Au revoir ! – Goodbye! 

Bonne soirée ! – Have a nice evening!
