The International Phonetic Alphabet in French

First things first. What is the IPA? The IPA, or International Phonetic Alphabet, is an alphabet system that is meant to guide pronunciation, in all languages. The letters (which are actually sounds), are often presented between brackets. 

 

For example: 

“Bonjour” is written [bɔ̃ʒuʁ] in the international phonetic alphabet in French. 

 

When you are learning a language, this is incredibly helpful, as this will give you the right pronunciation of a word. 

 

You can find words written in IPA characters in dictionaries, for example.
