Braderie in French – Meaning

  1. Foire annuelle au cours de laquelle les habitants vendent à bas prix des vêtements ou autres objets usagés.
  2. Vente de soldes souvent hors boutique par les commerçants d’une ville.
 

The first definition of Braderie in French can be translated as a big garage sale. 

The second definition is more of a clearance sale, a sellout or sell-off from stores. 

 

Exemple : Demain, les magasins organisent une grande braderie dans la ville. (Tomorrow, the stores are organizing a big sale in the city.)

Where does the word Braderie in French come from?

The word Braderie in the 15th century actually meant a grill restaurant or a grill room (une rôtisserie). It came from the French-speaking Belgians who used the dutch word “braden”, which means “to roast”.  Nowadays, we simply call such a place “une rôtisserie” and use “braderie” to talk about something that is being sold at a knockdown price.

Every year, in the north of France, there is La Braderie de Lille, which is a huge street market or flea market that takes place on the weekend of the first Sunday of September in the city of Lille. To know more about la braderie de Lille, click here.

The noun Braderie in French is a feminine noun. We say, “une braderie” or “la braderie”. Therefore, you need to pay attention to the articles and also to the gender if you need to apply adjectives to it. 

Example : La braderie des commerçants de ma ville est très connue et fréquentée. Elle a lieu tous les ans.
